    Concepts of childhood as perceived through educational planning and implementation in Trinidad from 1955 to 1975

    This study seeks to explore the origins and nature of concepts of childhood, initially as they have exhibited themselves in societal custom and practice, and then in educational planning and provision. A picture emerges of childhood always having been subject to manipulation, and of intentions and outcomes that do not always conflate, to the point where children's notions and actions were significant factors in effective change

    History teaching and multiculturalism

    This paper establishes an external theoretical base for multicultural education, then examines the concept within the local environment. It reviews relevant policy statements and the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) history syllabus against the background of the objectives of multicultural education. It also locates the discussion within the context of classroom practice in Trinidad and Tobago through the description of a research project in which three history teachers attempted to spell out, in practical terms, the relationship between multiculturalism and history teaching.

    This study sought to: 1) develop, with a small group of teachers, suitable approaches to the teaching of history as a multicultural discipline, and explore relevant issues and possible solutions: and 2) identify relevant attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of this group of teachers, and explore the relationship between these and classroom practice and its outcomes, in order to seek explanations and examine their implications for teacher education.
