Abstract:

The postcard shows Quaranteen Island also known as Chacachacare Island which lies in the Bocas del Dragón (Dragon's Mouth) between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. In 1921, a leper colony was established as such all persons with leprosy were required to live at Chacachacare and were cared for by the Dominican Sisters and from 1945 by the U.S. Sisters of Mercy. The colony lasted until 1984. |
