Title: Quaranteen [sic] Island, Trinidad
Abstract: The postcard shows Quarantine Island also known as Chacachacare Island which is one of the Bocas Islands and lies in the Bocas del Dragón (Dragon's Mouth) between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. In 1921, a leper colony was established here. From 1945, all persons with leprosy were required to live at Chacachacare and were cared for by the Dominican Sisters and by the U.S. Sisters of Mercy. The colony lasted until 1984. The island has been more or less abandoned since then.
