2. The 12th Caricom Head of Government Summit opens in St. Kitts today with the leaders eager to produce binding agreements on a wide range of issues. Hugh Crosskill reports that the first major agreement of the conference concerns a Venezuelan initiative allowing Caribbean goods duty free access to Venezuela. Sahadeo Basdeo, Trinidad and Tobago’s Foreign Minister, addresses the implementation of the Common External Tariff and the responsibility of Caricom to send an independent observer team to monitor the elections in Guyana. Erskine Sandiford, Prime Minister of Barbados, comments on the revival of the Caricom Multilateral Clearing Facility (00:35-07:13)
3. At the summit, Caribbean leaders are also urged to develop a promotional fund to market the region as a single tourist destination. The request comes from John Bell, Executive Vice-President of the Caribbean Hotel Association who also encourages the expansion of Caricom to include other Caribbean countries (07:13-09:22)
4. Another item on the agenda of the summit is the proposal to set up a Caribbean investment fund to attract investment of foreign capital to the Caribbean through the region’s private sector. 5. West Indies cricketer, Patrick Patterson is ruled out of team for the third test match against England due to an injury. England’s Michael Atherton will also be replaced by Hugh Morris (12:30-13:04)
6. Britain’s Duke McKenzie captured the WBO bantamweight title last night after defeating Mexico’s Gaby Canizales. Interview with Duke McKenzie and his manager Mickey Duff (13:04-14:48)
