2. Prison authorities in the Bahamas have carried out the execution of David Mitchell for the murder of a German couple almost 6 years ago. Earlier yesterday another prisoner, John Higgs, who was scheduled for execution alongside Mitchell, committed suicide.,. Debbie Nash reports that Mitchell’s execution has made very little impact on Nassau as there was no protests against his execution unlike in previous years. The Caribbean Justice group has been pushing for the abolition of the death penalty in the region. (00:30-05:42)
3. “There is strong feeling in the Cuban exile community South Florida about the decision by U.S. immigration to send back 6 year old Elian Gonzalez to his father in Cuba”. There has been demonstrations outside the house where Elian has been with his mother’s relatives in Miami. His mother died in an attempt to reach Florida by boat.
4. An outstanding debt of 15 million dollars was compromised by sugar cane farmers in Trinidad and Tobago. As a result, they have refused to cut any more canes until a better price is given before the start of the crucial crop. The farmers remain resolute that if the company does not agree to a substantial increase for the price for each ton of cane, they will strike. (11:18-13:47)
5. Aviation officials in the US are investigating the second computer failure that has caused serious repercussion flight delays on the east coast. This mishap forced the grounding of many flights. There is much speculation that a Y2K computer problem may be the cause even though the officials think otherwise. (13:48-15:25)
